Latest on Literature: Hero Pilot Writing Book

The pilot who successfully landed a plane with 155 passengers in the Hudson River on January 15, 2009 is going to write a book about his life. This amazing landing after the plane was compromised left everyone shaken up but alive. Later this year we will get to learn about Chesley Sullenberger after he works with a writer to get not one but two books published by William Morrow a subsidiary of HarperCollins. He won’t give up flying, either. In June he will be returning to be a pilot with US Airways. That amazing landing touched a lot of people watching, and now we will be able to read about Chesley Sullenberger’s life.

Print on Demand Publishing

Print on demand publishing goes hand in hand with self-publishing. Traditional publishers will print up hundreds, thousands, sometimes millions of copies of a book before any are sold. The traditional publisher will estimate how many copies will sell and print those up right away. Print on demand publishing works exactly how it sounds. No books are printed until a sale is made. When a customer purchases a copy of your book then and only then would a copy of the book be printed and sent to that customer. No wasted copies. No wasted paper. No lost investment if the book doesn’t sell as many copies as first estimated.

Get Your Book Reviewed or Have Your Product Reviewed

Loving Literary will review your book or book related product. While I am currently reviewing a lot of books more can be added. Just understand that your book or product review will not happen in a few days. I have a three shelf bookcase full of books to review. I am not sure what the math is on that, but I am guessing that I can review all of these books this year. I post book reviews once a week, on Sundays. I write honest reviews.

If you would like your book reviewed or your book related product reviewed you can get in touch with me here: http://www.nicolelamarco.com/contact.html

Thanks! I look forward to reviewing your work!

Book Business: Kindle 2 Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device

Amazon’s Kindle 2 is the brand new wireless reading device. This new technology allows you to carry your entire library of books with you - up to (or more than) 1,500 different books. In less than one minute you can download a new book and start reading it. The Kindle is about as thick as a magazine - about 1/3rd of an inch. You don’t even have to be near a computer or an Internet connection. The Kindle allows you to download and read books from anywhere at anytime. You can also have the Kindle read to you if you want to listen to the book, magazine, newspaper, or blog. Book prices are much lower when you use the Kindle, too. The Kindle Store has 245,000 books available and plenty of magazines, newspapers, and blogs. Most books are $9.99 with the Kindle. You can even highlight, bookmark and make notes.

Don’t take my word for it. Read the customer reviews, watch the product videos, and read all about the new Kindle:

Ted Kennedy’s Memoir to be Released

Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy has a memoir that will be coming out earlier than first planned. Ted Kennedy’s memoir will be out this fall 2009. Jonathan Karp is the book’s editor and he is the one who announced the earlier release at the Association of American Publisher’s yearly meeting. Twelve Imprint of the Hachette Book Group USA will be publishing Ted Kennedy’s memoir.

Ted Kennedy is now 77 years old and was diagnosed with brain cancer a year ago. It is not clear how much of the manuscript is completed. Part of the proceeds from the book will go to the John F. Kennedy Library.

Ted Kennedy’s memoir is said to be a rare look into the world of the Kennedy’s, because no Kennedy has written a memoir of this kind before.

Publisher Profile: Traditional Publishing

Traditional publishing is when an author writes a complete manuscript (or at least most of it), and then sends a proposal to a publishing house. An Editor at the publishing house will receive the proposal and choose to reject it or publish it. If the publishing house chooses to publish the manuscript they will then purchase the rights to the work and pay the author an advance. The advance covers some of the initial royalties on the book. The traditional publisher will determine how many books will sell easily and print that amount. The publisher invests in the book and the author by paying to package the book for sale and all of the marketing costs. The book is then sent to bookstores to be sold. It can take a long time to publish a book traditionally because the author (usually) sends out proposals to several different publishing houses before one decides to publish it. This can take years.

That’s traditional publishing! Please comment with your additions to this explanation of traditional publishing!

Censorship Corner: What is Censorship?

When I think of censorship I think about censored books, television, movies, magazines, and any other form of media. Reports have been censored. Anything that can be written can be censored. Have you ever tried to read a government report? There are black lines everywhere. That’s censorship. Maybe you requested your medical records from your doctor and found that most of it was blacked out. That’s censorship. That bleep you hear when someone on TV curses is censorship. Those black boxes that cover up body areas or t-shirt logos are censorship. Those white papers covering magazine covers is censorship. It’s used everywhere: in the media, in politics, in religion, and in the military. Some of us even do some of our own censorship at home with our own kids.

Censorship is the suppression of speech or deletion of communicative material which may be considered objectionable, harmful or sensitive, as determined by a censor. The rationale for censorship is different for various types of information censored,” according to Wikipedia .

Are we really a “free speech” society? What types of censorship have you experienced?

Book Business: How to Choose the Best Bookcase

Bookcases

You may have already guessed that I love bookcases, especially if you have read my blog about my dream library . AH, to have a huge library right in your own home! Someday…

Anyway, bookcases are great. They are functional and beautiful. After all, it is a piece of furniture you are adding to your home. Why shouldn’t it look great?

Sizing it Up:

Choosing the best bookcase for you would depend on how much space you have in your home, where you plan on putting it, what style you like, and how much you can spend on a bookcase. The first thing you need to do is get out your measuring tape. Measure the spot you have reserved for a new bookcase: the length, width and depth. Write this down so you have it handy when shopping for a new bookcase. There is nothing worse than buying that perfect bookcase, putting it together, and then finding out it doesn’t fit. Trust me, measure first.

Find Your Style:

Designers have come up with so many different styles now that it can be a little overwhelming.  First decide which color you want: black, dark brown, light brown, white, or some other color. This will help narrow down your search. Next, choose whether you want a closed bookcase or an open one. Open bookcases are usually tiered and are open in the back. Closed bookcases have only the front open. It just depends on what look you like better. My favorite style:

How Many Shelves?

All bookcases come with more than two shelves, as far as I know.  You can get bookcases with three shelves, four shelves, five shelves, six shelves, and more. You can get a wall to wall bookcase that goes all the way up to your ceiling if you have the money and the space.

Or, you could get a very small bookcase:

Figure out which shelf number is best for you. There are plenty in between! Various Bookcases

Money, Money, Money:

You always get what you pay for. Determine a budget for your bookcase investment and shop according to what you can afford. If money is no object:
