Shelter Me: A Review

Shelter Me by Juliette Fay

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed when I received this review copy in the mail. Another story about how someone went through the loss of a loved one, I thought.  I instantly named the book boring, and only because I know grief so well. I have lost some close loved ones and I didn’t want to experience grief through another book about it either. This may have been why I found the first five chapters a bit boring. They were too slow for my taste. I want action in the very first page. Instead I found a couple of journal entries. It wasn’t until chapter five that I began to appreciate this writer and the work. It sprung out some surprises at me and that is what I was waiting for since the first page. It was fantastic and so unexpected. Having finished the book I can appreciate the first five chapters now. I get it. The author, Juliette Fay, had to set up her characters. She had to show me what was happening. It was necessary. However, I still feel like it could have been done earlier in the book. I am amazed at how well Fay created these characters. Janie, the main character, is real to me. The things she did, thought and went through in grief I empathized with. I understood. I laughed and cried and gasped.

Rating:

Three out of Four Stars

Recommendations:

I recommend anyone from New England and anyone who has been through losing a loved one to read this book.

Shelter Me by Juliette Fay will be available in December 2008.
